What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Inside the officeNaturopathic medicine is the art and science of preventing and treating disease. It uses natural substances to support and encourage the body's innate healing mechanisms to heal itself, and in doing so it addresses the root cause of illness rather than suppressing the presenting symptoms. The role of the Naturopathic Doctor is to take into account the physical, mental and emotional aspects of the patient, thereby addressing the whole person, rather than the individual parts. This allows for individualized health care when diagnosing and developing a treatment plan.

Inside the officeNaturopathic Medicine is a safe and effective method of health care. The use of natural substances creates a non-toxic and non-invasive approach to healing, which in turn limits the possibility of side effects. Naturopathic Doctors are trained in prescribing the therapeutic dose of any nutritional or herbal supplement, as well as any contraindications associated with them. Naturopaths are also knowledgeable about any interactions between naturopathic remedies and conventional medicines and are trained to recognize conditions which are outside of their scope of practice and will refer to other health care practitioners when necessary. It is therefore wise to consult an N.D. before taking any herbal supplement.
